Hi mc_jesse,
I have the same issue here and unfortunately your advice couldn’t fix it. I’m running WP3.0.1 in German.
I changed the field label text in the MailChimp list setup to “Email”, but the WP widget still displays the English default “Email Address”.
Further recommendations would be highly apprecciated, since the Englisch label on a German site looks like a spelling mistake 🙁

if you look at the source of the site, you see that the friends section is most likely hand coded.
