UPDATE: Well, for whatever reason, completely wiping out and deleting the database and reinstalling (for the 4th time) seemed to do the trick. I hope this is an uncommon problem for many others. I did nothing differently in the install, so not sure where the glitches/bugs came from. Anyway, consider this thread solved.
