    Hello James,

I wanted to have a blog page component to my site that let’s me insert a headline with a link to a news story but this requires PHP programming which is beyond my capability. I wanted to set up a separate blog using wordpress.com but it seems that I can’t set up a new webesite, i.e. newwebsite.wordpress.com under my current user account. Is there a workaround for this or should I set up my blog page at blogger.com of some other host that will allow URL links?

    Thanks.

    Hello WPyogi,

I am back to full circle again on the issue of creating a WordPress site and a companion mysite/Wordpress.com blog. I have come to the conclusion that you can either use WP as a website or a blog but not for both, these features seem mutually exclusive. I know you said this was not a typical workflow so what version of WP are you using? I’m thinking that I should go back to an earlier version instead of the current one so I can have the best of both worlds. Can you recommend which version of WP I can use to A) host a website and B) host a blog at the same time?

    Thanks

Thanks, my theme does include this widget but, after reading a bit more, there is not a way to link posts from the sidebar if you have a static page. I was hoping WP could act both as a blog and a website but the two seem to be mutually exclusive at the moment unless you know PHP, which I don’t. In any case, I tried telling my client that WP is meant for PHP programmers and not HTMl and CSS coders. I’ll probably send her to Wix or Squarespace which have much better tools.

Thanks, but nothing in Jetpack helped. I was hoping I could use the sidebar to link to my blog post but that doesn’t seem to work in the widget sidebar. In fact, that sidebar is very useless so I don’t know why it is even a feature in WP. I created a workaround by creating a separate blogger.com page and then linking to that.

Thanks, I’m really struggling with WordPress at all levels.

Thanks, That makes sense to me. I’ll dump out of the child theme and use Jetpack.

On another note, I am unable to create any new posts to ask questions on other topics because I can’t find the path to do so. The instructions below say:

Log in to your WordPress Administration Panel (Dashboard).
    Click the ‘Posts’ tab.
    Click the ‘Add New’ sub-tab.
Start filling in the blanks: enter your post title in the upper field, and enter your post body content in the main post editing box below it.
As needed, select a category, add tags, and make other selections from the sections below the post. (Each of these sections is explained below.)
When you are ready, click Publish.

Did they recently move the ‘Post’ tab because I cannot find it.

    Thanks

    Hi James,

Thanks for the link. I read the workflow but I cannot achieve the desired results. There is not a way to “plug in” the selected CSS element into the specific WP page and edit its selected CSS element. I’m back to manually going through the CSS code to find the element and make changes. This is a real time killer! I think it is because I’m still using a child theme that seems to be the source of my problems. Someone told me to abandon the child theme and use a plugin to change the CSS elements. Can you recommend the best plugin that finds and edits the CSS elements withing the WP theme. Or should I download my bootstrap file and code in Dreamweaver?

    (@indieburner)

WOW! This is far more complicated then I thought! I’m used to Dreamweaver which has a visual editor and easy to CSS selectors and tools. As for using using my browser css-selection developer tools, is there plugin to find selected code in the WP page?

    Thanks

When follow your path, it only displays the theme info below. I know I have to copy the code from the parent theme into this but I don’t know how to code in PHP

    /*
    Theme Name: Gardena-child
    Description:
    Author: dcwater
    Template: gardenia

(optional values you can add: Theme URI, Author URI, Version, License, License URI, Tags, Text Domain)
    */

Anyway, it is not possible to access the parent CSS using child theme. However, I found a good workaround this. I copy the code from the parent template into a text editor and backup locally in case something goes wrong. I can also grab the HTLM and CSS code from the browser and drop it into Dreamweaver to tweak and then upload and replace the files on my server. Is there a plugin to help automate this workflow?

I think there is some confusion here. When I go into Edit Themes, my child theme is selected by defualt but I cannot find the CSS files. But when I select the orginal, parent theme, all the PHP files show up. To be clear, if I make changes, I modify the original files so, again, what is the point of using a child-theme?

    (@indieburner)

    Thanks James,

So let me see if I get this right. I access the CSS files in my server, tweak and then go back to WordPress? And would that be the main CSS file?

    Hi Stephen,

What I meant by CSS nesting is grouping CSS propeties inside another CSS property or container. In any case, I just figured out my problem. I’m using a child theme which does not allow me access to the parent theme CSS. I thought the whole point of child-theme was to protect the template but since I can’t change CSS, I can’t makes tweaks to color and layout.

I really don’t understand the use of the child theme so I’ll go back to the original theme and delete the child theme.

I’m sorry, but you can’t do CSS nesting in WordPress so there is no way you can truly customize a website. Yes, for brains like you that can program in PHP code, I suspect you can achieve desired results. That said, the web is based on HTLM5 and CSS and WP falls apart at that level. As for 20 percent of the web being powered by WP, it does not surprise me that 20 percent of the web looks the same because of the limited amount “approved” templates available.

Thanks for the link, I’ll go back to Dreamweaver and figure out my plan.

Thanks but I can’t show the website yet because my client doesn’t want it published. In any case, I’m going to build my own template in Dreamweaver and upload to WP.

    Thanks,

I want to add new CSS classes to the template but it appears that I need to learn PHP, which I don’t have time to do. I guess the reason why so many WP sites look the same is that most designers who don’t know PHP are stuck with the existing templates. It’s a shame becuase the websites are designed using HTML and CSS code. It’s back to Dreamweaver for me.
