I deleted Jetpack Markdown and also Jetpack and reinstalled the latter. Enabled Markdown. Still not rendering…

It is the 2014 theme. It doesn’t appear to offer excerpts and there is no facility to change excerpt length (correct me of I’m wrong).
My point about hacking core php referred to advice given on a similar thread some years ago — which I found when I searched. I would happily introduce a child theme.
