I am busy putting a contest together where my users will upload photos and content. I suppose it can be done with a forum but I have not come across is simple forum that allows photos to be uploaded.

you can get a plugin here http://www.deepwave.net/articles/hide_dashboard/
That will do what you require.It sends the subscriber after login to the profile page.
