Consider running your site through the google page speed tool for some useful hints to speed up your site:
http://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/
Its configured out of the box. Also make sure you have an appropriate site map tool to submit your sitmaps to google.

Ok, just to expand on this. I did a manual install via ftp and have exactly the same problems with the manually installed version of WordPress.
Very odd and any assistance is appreciated 🙂
