My reason was that on a pc 5 columns at 150-200 still results in slightly blurry thumbs but at the same thumb width and 6 columns then the thumbs would look better.

I am trying to keep the size of the whole page as small as I can so do want to have to go over 175/200 for the thumb size

With the column set at 5 I still get 2 wide on a mobile no matter what width I set the thumbs at. Unlike the fixed which cuts me down to1 column on a mobile anything over 150 wide thumbs setting.

    Thanks for your reply.
The problem is 150 wide give 7 columns which is to many on pc as too small thumbs (bad) but that does give me 2 columns on a mobile (good)
    160 = 7 columns pc 2 on mobile
165 = 7 columns on pc and 1 on mobile

    175 = 6 columns on pc = good but only 1 column on a mobile = bad

Problem is no combo I do can get me 6 columns pc and 2 on a mobile. With the fixed width.

Great — sort of (glad its not something I did that can not be be fixed ) now that you are on it I know you will fix it.
I built another website for myself and was planing to link 21 galleries instead of rebuilding them all in the new site and thought I had broke somthing.

@bradvin That sounds great look forward to joining it.

I think you need to go to the gallery settings and change the thumbnail width to something bigger. If your thumbnail width is smaller than the box it is in then it will be enlarged to fit and so not look as sharp.
Not sure how word press is handling it but its possible using med size images.

Ok forget my last post because I wasn’t using firefox properly – with its inspector- network open I found that i need to scroll the whole page to get the full page Mb result.
Hope this is useful for others.
My old gallery setting was justified gallery
    thumb height 330
    row height 130
    max row height 200%
For my large gallery this gave 5.20 Mb total page and with sharp thumbnail images
(yes this will depend on the optimised size of your images to start with )

Now for the same images and page but as a Masonry gallery with settings
    5 columns
    no gutter
Thumbnail 275 = slightly soft thumbnails but not blurred
    I get 3.30 Mb

My above settings were chosen because with the justified gallery it gives an average of 7 images wide on a computer and so not too small – which then translates to 2 images wide on a mobile.
Anything less than my settings for the justified gallery resulted in only 1 image being displayed on a mobile (defeats the object of a justified gallery display) my settings above resulted in a 2 image wide display on a mobile.

With the justified gallery I could not find a combination of settings that would give me at least 2 images wide on a mobile at size not too small on a computer and reasonably sharp thumbs that resulted in any less than 5.20 Mb for the page. (my page my images just for reference)

However with the masonry gallery and the above settings for it the display on a computer was 5 images wide ( so bigger than justified ) and also 2 images wide on a mobile – same as justified. with the resulting page size of 3.30Mb.

So I am happy with the settings with my masonry gallery.

I did notice something else with the two galley’s
I said my settings resulted in 2 images wide on a mobile with a justified gallery BUT that was only the case if I had a portrait image next to a landscape image – if i didn’t then on a mobile it would still display as 1 image stacked.

But a masonry gallery works much better and so long as there are a couple of portrait orientated images the gallery will display 2 image wide on a mobile.

I just wish I could also get a thin border on a masonry gallery as the border size “thin” is still too thick for me.
With the justified gallery I can set the margins to “1” which results in a nice thin hairline border just enough to differentiate between each image.

Thank’s for helping me understand. I see your point about enabling yours as well as the A3 lazyload.

I could do some GT matrix tests with either one on or off but I find that the scores can vary depending on which way the wind is blowing !

I am just trying to keep things as fast as possible.

Great thanks for helping me understand.
I am using firefox and had to look up up how to do the same thing on there.
At 150 slightly blurry I get 1.64 Mb and at 250 not pin sharp but good I get 2.31Mb.

I don’t need the thumbs pin sharp cause they are just thumbs with a promise of a bigger image when they are tapped but at the same time I dont want them to look rubbish.

I will have a play to get the best compromise.

Thank you so much for looking into this for me. I will contact the lightbox developer.

Just had a play and installed your lightbox but now when I click the first thumbnail and it opens in the foobox lightbox there is no change to the URL from the main page URL that the gallery is in, So I still cannot make a link in another site direct to an opened image in your light box so its ready to view the rest.
Hope you know what I mean.
There is no unique URL that I can copy and paste and use on another iste when I open an image in foobox, its just the same page URL.
