Thanks for your help and effort. We were up against a tight deadline to get access to this and were running out of time. (we were starting to panic)

We now have access to the account again by editing the functions.php files as described in the codex article.
We tried doing that originally but couldn’t get it to work. This was almost certainly my fault as digging around in the site files with an ftp client is not something I’ve done before.
There are a number of funtions.php files and various folders and finding the right one was the problem.

We will have a look into why the automated email reminder did not work.
Our gmx email was not recognised when we tried it and yet and older Yandex email address was. Yet no emails came through to the yandex account either.
In the profile page, the gmx email address is correctly showing so not sure why it doesn’t work with the auto password reminder.
As I say, we will look into that at a more leisurely pace now that we have access once more.
