    Oh, I forgot to post what I think was the REAL problem. I had to change my DB_HOST to the IP address of my server (locally assigned to the network card) as I guess local host was not identified correctly; may need to update the hosts file, which I will try later, but at least know that using an IP address is very useful!

    Fixed! In the absence of a working blog installation as a reference point, I went back to the database and deleted (dropped) everything related to my new installation. I dropped the database and user I had created for the blog, and started over. I created the database, created the user, and granted permissions to the user on the new database, and now I can get to the WordPress installation page!

    I did everything fresh today, never had done it before, on the server. The server is completely under my control. I will not lose anything if I remove what I’ve done and do it all again, I just don’t think anything will be different, but I’ll try. Thanks.
