    bdbrown,
    Thank you very much for your articulate and considerate replies.

    I think you’ve given me enough info to help me with the initial question and how to fix it.

    That’s another question I had. I installed Child Theme plugin so I could update, but when I go to test the theme it looks nothing like what I have. When I was using 2014, it tested out perfectly. Now I’m on Renew stack and when I test the Child Theme it’s not even close to what I built. maybe I should change to Simple Custom CSS plugin? Don’t want to get off tangent if this is an issue for another topic.

    I’d like to try your advice and get back to you if that’s okay…

    Also, some of the CSS elements are controlled by “User Agent Stylesheet”?

    That’s great!

    The answer to my question makes sense. And I found the elements that affect the headers on the page in the developers (elements) window on Google:

    For example this page:
    http://themetamodern.com/metamodern-perspective/

    <h3 style=”
    margin-top: 0px;
    “>EAT THE RICH, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM</h3>

    and then

    <h4 style=”
    margin-top: 20px;
    “>β€œThey bought Manhattan Island with trinkets and beads, and now Manhattan has bought you with theirs.”</h4>

    So I just need to find them in the CSS.

    Thank you for the very articulate explanation. If you think my solution is correct, go ahead and close the topic. Thanks again and much appreciated!

    Thanks for your consideration.

    If you wanted to give me the code element to change the distance between image and header that would be great. Unless it’s inappropriate. I can go to the link you recommended if that’s better. But I understand the ‘inspect elements’ in Google and Firebug in FF and use that method all the time. Usually do my editing in Google.
    But, I was wondering what the answer to my initial question was about the <h3> placement before or after the image. That does shorten the space between them, but not sure if it’s a “sanctioned” method. Does the question make sense?

    Thanks again!

    Hey thanks!

    So, I shouldn’t be doing what i’m doing with the headers?

    It will be hard to find. The Style sheet for X came to me in one big paragraph unspaced. So it will take some slow foraging through, but I’ve been there with other style sheets before, so maybe give it a shot. Once i make the change the guy who’s server it’s on can make the change and update it for me. He has access to the FTP file. Or, I’ll send the code directly to him.

    If you’re articulate enough, I may be able to locate the elements that need changing. I’m familiar enough, I think with spacing and padding nomenclature to make adjustments if needed.

    Fortune favors the bold.

    Thank you,

    Thank you for your reply.
    Pardon my ignorance, but where do I go to find this? I’ve been to Themes, I select “Appearance, Edit and Style css for X and an incomplete file pops up. Where do I enter the info to bring up the actual CSS? Do I paste that URL into my address bar or ctrl-F? It’s how to get to the actual CSS that I can’t seem to figure out. The exact steps. I pasted it into the bar and a search comes up with links to css, but is it my css? I’m confused. There are no obvious indicators where to go to customize X anywhere in Themes except the “Customizer”, or “Appearance” then “Edit” and that brings up the CSS with no elements under the ID. No indicators for “Integrity light” CSS, so if you got to it, could you please tell me how you did it?
    There’s no problem finding it in 2014. All the style sheets and php files are right there in 2014’s editor when you open it up.

    Thank you,

    Eric

    Thank you, I copied that.

    But the trouble is that when I open the CSS for X, there’s nothing there! Just this:

    /*

    Theme Name: X
    Theme URI: http://theme.co/x/
    Author: Themeco
    Author URI: http://theme.co/
    Description: An immensely powerful and endlessly customizable WordPress theme.
    Version: 2.0.0
    License: GNU General Public License v2.0
    License URI: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
    Text Domain: __x__

    */

    Where are all the elements?

    And when I try to make a Child Theme and test it, it looks nothing like the Integrity stack that I worked on.

    Severe learning curve.

    Thanks again.

    I would like to edit the X theme CSS. So I open the editor and…where is it? A style sheet with a paragraph and nothing below it to edit. Am I missing something? I’d like to change the slider bottom border color and the menu tab accent color. I don’t know why the designers have to smack a bright red instead of a neutral tone. It’s a real pain in the _ _ _. Especially with the drop cap shortcode. Just give us defaults with neutral colors guys! And a simple way to change color. 2014 has a colors plugin. It works great.
    But anyway, I’d really appreciate some advice or suggestions. I can change it in the elements panel temporarily, of course, but how do I get to the real style sheet? I was on twenty Fourteen and switched to X. I have a child theme for 2014. Is that something that could affect the X Style CSS?

    Here’s the site in question. You’ll see the red instantly, so you’ll know which elements I want to change in the header and slider.

    Thank you kindly for any assistance or advice,

    There are a lot of CSS’s through the structure. Would I just copy the main Style CSS or is there a way to “select all” the files and transfer them to the child? I’m referring to any changes I’ve made to a short code (column divider lines, etc.) or plug in changes, if you know what I mean. When you open the editor lots of different CSSs and phps are there and at the bottom is the Style CSS. That’s where I get overwhelmed.

    As it stands now, my server host has backed up my entire site as a precaution in a separate file if tragedy strikes.

    And then, once it’s all in the child, then I can update the original theme to 4.0?

    We’re getting there. This might be might be my last inquiry.
    Thank you for your articulate advice; it’s very helpful.

    (@ejwickes)

    Yes, that makes sense. So could I copy and paste my altered CSS into a child theme, update my parent theme and then just work off of the child theme for additional changes? or – copy and save the CSS in Word, update and then paste the original code back in? I’m new at this, so this could be a dumb question for you.

    Back again!

    I tried entering your fix. It worked!

    Thank you.
    Although I’m not up on child themes and their application. I tend to go right into the actual CSS editor. I will do some homework.

    Thank you. I saved your suggestions to see if I can apply them later. Where would I put this code in the CSS? I’m new to this.

    Thank you again,

    Okay!

    Found the problem. In Visual Composer there were a couple of empty text blocks that could only be seen in that editor. I may have deleted some text without deleting the element it was placed in. Duh.

    Your initial fix was the over-all cure for the situation. My error had left some ‘phantom’ space on those two pages.

    I think we got it.

    Thanks Maestro! Case closed!
