I googled “301 redirect wordpress” and found a couple of free plugins so will give it a try – thanks for the advice – I will let you know the solution that works out for me.

Searching the forums seems to return a time out error here, and has done for the past week. Anyway, thanks for the information and I’m pleased to read I don’t need a plugin.
Thanks whooami for the codex link, I will read the information and see what I can come up with.
I wonder if anyone else has tired what I intend to do or could give any more detailed advice?
