I’m having a similar issue. I did try using a plugin to reset my thumbnails but it didn’t make a difference. Is it just about setting a maximum width somewhere?

Do you happen to know if there’s a reason for this? Is it super difficult to integrate, or something WordPress just wants to avoid for some reason? (What reason?)
