Actually I think this isn’t a problem any more. My dashboard has updated and shows the same historical stats for the old and new blogs, so I disconnected the old blog.

I think your hunch about php version is correct – I was experiencing problems on a CentOS 6 server with php 5.3. Since I filed this issue the server has been migrated to CentOS 7 with php 5.4. Seems to work now!
