    And thank you SO MUCH for replying. I’m really new to this (although I’ve learned an amazing amount in the past month) and when I need help I come to these forums and generally get one line responses that assume I know more than I do so they aren’t helpful.

    You give great responses.

    And as a humorous sidenote, I registered on “webdesignforums.net” (do you know that one?) and I got a great response from “Diddy” (very informative) when I went to see if he was online I found out he’s a 16 year old kid from Sydney, Australia…hahaha. Eye opener — should have known.

    No, I think I’ve gotten it fixed…kind of. Let me ask you, how do you so quickly see what it looks like in so many different browsers? Do you have them all installed on your computer?

    And, now I’m having difficulty understanding layout design…this is making me crazy. I’ve talked to a couple of people that say my wrapper creates a scroll bar b/c it’s too wide and yet I haven’t been able to find a computer yet that makes that happen. (I guess the resolution is too small?)

    Just as I thought I was starting to understand the resolution/screen size aspect of the layout I found this…

    If you look at my site (wrapper 1000px) and then look at one of my fav. blogs thisyounghouse.com (wrapper 940px)…their site (at least on my screen with the same browser) appears larger. Why is that? It should be and appear smaller right?

    On my screen my wrapper leaves about a 3″ margin on either side of it…this young house only has about a 1″ margin on either side.

    Is there anyway for me to send you a picture? I took a picture of what I’m talking about.

    Basically, I’m using Firefox 3 and when I pull young house up, the edges of their wrapper comes about an inch from either side of my computer screen and firebug says it is 940px.

    When I pull mine up the edges of my wrapper comes about 2 1/2 – 3 inches from either side of my screen (so smaller) but mine is 1000px wide.

    So you’re not liking my color scheme? I’ll check out the color schemer

    Well Esmi you seem to be my bff in this forum. I really appreciate your comprehensive replies to my various questions.

    Okay, I’ll try this…very helpful.

    But can you help me understand what’s going on with the visual thing…check out a site that I really love

    thisyounghouse.com and then mine
    diyhomesavvy.com

    I’ve changed the width of my wrapper back to 1000px but look at This Young House…theirs looks bigger than mine in the same browser on the same screen but theirs is apparently only 940px wide. Why is that?

    ok thanks, but when I go and look at the actual code from that post that first p tag is closed…it looks like this:

    <p style=”text-align: center;”></p>

    <p style=”text-align: center;”>GORGEEOUS!!!</p>

    So what do I do with that? There are several errors that don’t seem right when I investigte them to the best of my ability.

    Thanks again Iri

    Iri, I don’t understand…I only see one p tag in the example. When I look at the full code I don’t see an open p tag either. Thanks for that link I did read it and it shed some light on the background but I’m afraid doesn’t help me much with my errors…although I’m down to 11.

    Makes me want to bang my head against a brick wall.

    Jleuze,

    Could you please help me with my question about IE problems in the post http://wordpress.org/support/topic/257020?replies=3 …I’ve seen your answers before and you’re so thorough that you may be able to really help me…I’m lost.

    Thanks so much, Courtney

    Thank you so much for responding. And yeah, I’ve been working on them all day…since someone pointed me there earlier. I’m down to 32 errors now but I’m really having difficulty clearing these up. How do I figure out how to fix these (they are those I left until the end)? I’ve found several that don’t seem to really exist, for instance it will say “line 171 column 18” but then when you look at is there is no column 18 on that line. Am I thinking of this wrong?

    And could anyone tell me what this error means:

    # Error Line 174, Column 31: document type does not allow element “p” here; missing one of “object”, “applet”, “map”, “iframe”, “button”, “ins”, “del” start-tag

    <p style=”text-align: center;”>GORGEOUS!!!</p>

    The mentioned element is not allowed to appear in the context in which you’ve placed it; the other mentioned elements are the only ones that are both allowed there and can contain the element mentioned. This might mean that you need a containing element, or possibly that you’ve forgotten to close a previous element.

    One possible cause for this message is that you have attempted to put a block-level element (such as “<p>” or “<table>”) inside an inline element (such as ““, “<span>”, or “<font>”).

    I feel silly but…yes I have “validated” it and I got several errors (lots of them…mostly related to trying to use NiftyCorners) but I have no clue how to fix any of them because each error is over my novice head.

    Where in the code is it refering to when it says Line XXX, Column XXX?

    oh sorry…

    You want the code to look like:

    <div id=”header”>
    <div id=”headerimg”>
    (etc)
    </div>
    </div>
    <div id=”page”>
    <div id=”navmenu”> …and so on down.

    Is that what you set up? I’m sorry about the formatting problems you experienced before…but is this what you did? I may not have explained myself.

    Can you post the code that is predominant?

    diyhome1

    (@diyhome1)

    hahaha, yep…that’ll work to. I’m new to this so I probably do come up with some “hard ways” of doing things.

    diyhome1

    (@diyhome1)

    Type them out in bulleted form or however else you want them to look and attach a hyperlink to each one. The url for each category is probably

    example.com/category/categoryname

    in that example of the url the first category is the actual word “category” but the categoryname would be whatever you named that category.

    I have a home improvement site so my plumbing category page looks like this

    diyhomesavvy.com/category/plumbing

    rocketllama, you sound kind of new to this…I am too. I’m not sure if this will help you but I discovered Firebug after about three weeks and wish someone…anyone…had told be about it sooner.

    It’s an add-on for Mozilla Firefox (which you should get if you don’t use it already) and then go to getfirebug.com and download the add-on. Once you do that…when you are on your site hit F12 and a window will open up on the bottom of your screen. Then hit Ctrl+Alt+C to “inspect” your site…you can hover over your entire site with your mouse and see different elements outlined in dark blue.

    Once you’ve got the element (or font of a specific type in your case) outlined click your mouse once to hold the code there…in the right half of the window is the code (and font size) you’re looking for. It will tell you exactly what line of what css file you need to change.

    You can also change anything you want in firebug and it will make those changes for you in your site so you can “preview” them…changes in firebug aren’t permanent. As soon as you refresh your page the clock strikes 12 and…

    Hope that helps…and if this was useless to you or you’re way beyond this kind of help then I apologize.
