I have reinstalled WP in /public/www using 3.0.1 and did not modify anything and it just worked fine. No errors, logged into admin and it’s working perfectly. I do not understand why, but happy with the result.
Well, I just downloaded 3.0.1, and reinstalled the whole WP suite in /public/www and it worked first time, taking me into the dashboard!

Sorry, yes I also get a login screen but then after entering the password it gives the error message as detailed earlier.
