Sidebar width is flexible, it depends on the device’s screen width (like the rest of the theme’s layout).
A link in the header image? I may introduce the choice to use it in the 1.1 version (so you have to be patient, building a child theme only to introduce this is not very handy).

If I remember well, Bootstrap 3.0 dropped support for older browser versions, including IE. At the same time, as I don’t use Windows, I can’t test Melany in IE, so it will be appreaciated if you could post some screenshots.
