Does it matter that there aren’t opening and closing list tags on the wp_register line?

When I was on 1.5 beta, the login link would change to “logout” with an admin link under it, if I remember correctly. The “Edit this” links would show as well. Now I don’t get the “Edit this” links even if I’m logged in as admin.
