Oh god, I’m so overwhelmed by all those interacting plugins. 😀 It all works now. Clearing cache didn’t work, but I disabled Smush on widgets only, which did the trick. Changing the setting in Autoptimize worked as well. Good to go now 👍

You’re right, the conflict is with Smush. Disabling the Lazy Load feature of WP Popular Posts itself didn’t do the trick though, I had to deactivate Smush as well.
The thumbnail gets loaded now, the widget still does not have the correct visuals. It’s always switching to a standard bullet point look. Is the problem coming from my theme? Is it simply not compatible with the widget…?
