To answer my own question, replacing the basic page template with the sidebar-page template does what I want.
I did it only for the front page, but it could be done for any page.
Rereading our exchange, I think we were talking past each other.

I just mean the RSS widget, and the blogroll widget. They appear next to the blog only (which for me is not the front page).
It occurred to me after posting that my scenario is what the showcase template is for …
You can see the blogroll on the “news” page here: christopher-shea.com. I want to get it better integrated into the site.
