I had the same problem recently and solved this by going to Options > General > “unchecking” the boxes under
Membership:
Anyone can register
Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Try going to Options > General and uncheck the boxes under Membership:
– Anyone can register
– Users must be registered and logged in to comment
That’s how I got my comments back.
