In reply to: Not Feeling Smart Today-that’s (if i’m reading your ? correctly) all things which reside inside of the ‘admin’ section of WP, rather than in the ‘front end’, I think that what you’re trying to acomplish can only be done by editing core files within the wp-admin folder (which I wouldn’t recommend doing because future updates/upgrades won’t be possible without creating a mess).
the only other approach I can think of off the top of my head would be to create a plugin (or maybe one already exists, you’re not feeling smart, but I’m feeling lazy, so I don’t feel like checking my notes or the wp-plugins.net site) which controls what’s displayed on the write post page based on a user’s ‘access level’, this way you’re not editing any core files, but can hide things you don’t want users to see, I’m assuming/guessing that you only want to hide those things from some authors/users, not someone like the site admin/yourself, etc). If i feel ‘unlazy’ later, I’ll check both my notes and the existing plugins, then post an update.

(ps. what you’re looking to change shouldn’t be theme dependent since it’s in admin.css and wp-admin folders, rather than themes/default (eg ‘Kubrick’ as you mentioned).

In reply to: sidebar font problemfirst, you shouldn’t be using
<font>tags to control the fonts/etc, but rather should be adjusting your theme’s css file and using the classes/id’s provided or creating new ones if needed.I can’t tell exactly what the problem is without seeing both your sidebar.php code and your theme’s style.css files at least. your problem could also reside in the index.php or header.php files, since these are both loaded before sidebar, so there could be an open tag/misplaced id/class etc. inside those as well.
if you wish, you can email your style.css and sidebar.php at least to chradil@comcast.net and I’ll take a look.

In reply to: Google searchesI just happened upon this thread via a wp-forums email, anyway, I know that you’ve resolved your issue (and i think whatever is happening is kind of strange), but you might consider using something like the email-immunizer plugin which hides all email addresses published on your blog (in posts, pages, etc) from harvesters/spammers by converting the email address strings to either hexadecimal or ASCII character codes.
Forum: Everything else WordPress
In reply to: Require Registration or NOTI would consider this to be a personal/per site type of issue, for example certain types of sites lend themselves to ‘requiring’ registration, while others it’s more of an ‘un-natural’ or ‘awkward’ kind of thing. so, depending on what specifically you’re trying to do with your site, it’s something you should consider independantly of what ‘most’ others do, especially since there’s typically a ‘why’ attached to what folks are out there doing, and the why’s are very different from case to case.
i would say from a ‘spam’ perspective, as long as you’re using something like the akismet spam plugin, don’t worry about requiring registration for spam reasons.

In reply to: How to find all the BOMs in my blog?if you’re using MS windows, consider notepad2 (search at sourceforge will find it) — i’ve replaced all of my MS windows notpad.exe’s with that — it syntax hi-lites just about every language, and doesn’t create any of the encoding problems.

In reply to: Multiple Banner Ad Rotator?ps. I forgot to mention the phpAdsnew plugin which works along with phpAdsnew within WP, found here:

In reply to: Adjusting a margini think it looks OK. your theme has some padding or margins built in to the top or bottom of either the
.entryor.postclass in style.css which is causing the extra bit of space between the ‘post’ and the ‘line’. it’s easy enough to adjust if you want to but as I mentioned, I think it looks pretty good as is, if I have some time later I’ll load your css up in topstyle and let you know what needs changing in order to center things...c
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Adjusting a margindepending on your theme, you’ll just need to adjust margin/padding (top or bottom) settings for either the post or entry classes, it actually doesn’t look so bad the way it is in either IE or FF.
BTW, which translation plugin are you using ?

In reply to: My footer has moved….How to move backit appears correctly connected in firefox, however it’s at 100% width instead of matching up with the rest of the theme, there is some separation in IE, and also the 100% width issue.
1) Have you made any changes to your css files ?
2) Did you create backups of the files before you changed them (or use a version control system) ?3) What if any of your theme’s php files have you changed ?
— a footnote, if it’s css changes, your problem is likely due to changes (and differences in the way FF and IE handle them) to margin and padding settings

In reply to: Permalink Structure,Re-write Rules and WP Pagesok, tried it out in thesandbox
see the bob and cats posts/pages it borks exactly as expected. the /category or /taxonomy/tags thing (other than for something like %authorname% as mentioned above) is useless cruft, it’s just as easy to create permalink crash/clash issues with them as without.
i’ve created a page called cats (the parent page) and a sub page called bob, as well as a category called bob, a category called cats and a post called bob, and it is as dysfunctional as I had expected.
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Permalink Structure,Re-write Rules and WP PagesI raised a similar issue on the hackers list a couple of weeks ago, and the discussion pretty much degraded into a number of .htaccess hack solutions for part one, but I don’t think we really got into the /category thing. I’ve done a bunch of searching, etc, and haven’t been able to come up with anything solid (short of hacking around in core) to get rid of it though.
At the moment, I have enough folks (granted they’re mostly seo paranoids, and have some kind of religious fanaticism about URL depth) asking me to rid them of the /category part, I’m going to have to do something about it.
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Permalink Structure,Re-write Rules and WP PagesPart 2. – I understand what you’re saying, if a user were to create a WP ‘page’ called cats and a ‘category’ called cats, things would bork without the /category (or whatever you put in the category field) part. I suppose that in part I’m assuming that folks using pretty permalinks like that would have enough sense not to create a ‘page’ and a ‘category’ with the same names/slugs. Personally (and for a couple of clients) I’d like to drop the /whatever part, and work within the guidelines that a category can’t be named the same thing as a page/slug. No matter what you put in the field (or if you leave it blank and get /category) it just ends up being extra un-needed cruft in the URL in most cases. I can see making a case for using the word “tags” in place of /category since tags are currently somewhat of an “in” kind of thing, but in the long run, it’s just extra fluff.
While I understand why it’s written (WP Core) that way, I don’t see a meaningful use for that ‘chunk’ of the URL (other than as you mentioned avoiding crashes with other pages/permalinks, which if that’s the only reason it’s there, it’s a pretty poor design), I could see using something like %authorname% on a blog with many authors, or something like that, which at least makes a little bit of sense, but just sticking some extra ‘stuff’ in the URL to compensate for users that would ‘do’ without thinking, and end up creating the naming conflict you’ve mentioned doesn’t seem practical.
The same ‘clash’ or ‘crash’ situation exists even with /category or /whatever you put in the box anyway — suppose a user puts ‘cats’ or ‘bob’ in the category field, then an actual category called “spots”, you run into the same crash/clash if a user creates a page called “bob” and a sub-page called “spots”, or a page called “category” and sub-page called “spots”. So why not have the ability to just eliminate the cruft ?
