In reply to: Comment Themesi don’t want to debate that issue, it’s a dead horse, my personal feeling, is that at least put up an a how i built the site page with no link and ack the fact that you’re running your cool as hell site with free software, and at least the name of the software.

In reply to: Widgetizing Theme: Multiple sidebars?i’m using the plugin on a couple of sites, and i’m going to have to double check tommarow, ’cause i’m getting tired, but i think the way i did it was to use the
register_sidebars(etcfunction instead of multipleregister_sidebarfunctions.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Permalinks revisited (lack of index.php causes problem)if you’re going to use the .htaccess file, don’t forget, you can use the “fancy” permalinks as well if your host has mod_rewrite, just be careful with the .htaccess in case they have the frontpage server extensions installed.

In reply to: Adding a login/register box to a pageyou’ve got a couple of options,
– if you create a “page” using the dashboard under “write->page” you can place the code in there (don’t use the “fancy text” editor though), I would create my own css classes for the form’s styling and put those in my theme’s style.css file.
– if you just want to “permanantly” add one of those forms to say all “single post” pages, then just paste the form into single.php for your theme where you want the form, ditto css info.
– same idea for sidebar.php
it really depends on where/when you want the forms to appear as far as where/how to use the form code.
i was thinking you might have just created some static html pages of your own which might not work as easily as creating a “page” through the WP admin interface.

In reply to: Author and images IEyes, you’re using kubrick based theme, author info is commented out as I mentioned. YOu’ll see where it tells you to uncomment, etc.
url problem — looks like your host (is it free or something ?) is using some kind of “iframe” setup, this is why you’re having the url problems, also the host company looks like they’re adding popup windows. i suggest finding a more wordpress freindly host for your site.

In reply to: Comment Themesok, that looks like a professionally developed (or purchased from one of the many “theme/style” online stores) theme.
before I get into the hows, I was a little disturbed after viewing the entire site, the guy doesn’t even have one link back to wordpress that I can find anywhere. that kind of irritates me.
anyway, styling your comments even close to what he’s done is a major project. you’ll need to create a highly customized style.css and make some changes to almost all of the php files in your theme.
what are both of your url’s ?
you might want to take a look at some of the styles/themes
at http://www.oswd.org I contribute and participate there as well as here, and have found that sometimes it’s easier to “port” a design that I like from there to wordpress rather than start from scratch. I point clients there all the time so they can at least get some ideas as to what they want to do.I’ll take a look at both of your sites, if you’re willing to put the effort in, I’ll at least be able to help get you started.
Getting things to look really slick isn’t really as difficult as some folks make it sound.

In reply to: WordPress/PHPBB/Gallery/MediaWiki IntegrationI’ve done a number of projects similar/exactly like what you’re looking to do. my email addy is chradil at comcast dot net if you need some help.
what’s your url ?
depending on what the site is “based” on for example if it’s a “blog” based site, etc. There are a couple of different approaches which will make your life much easier.
For example, for “blog” based sites, I do a WP install in the site root, then I use xoops as the cms for the rest of the site, then instead of running a standalone phpBB for example I’ll use the phpBB xoops module port, coppermine photo gallery port as a xoops mod, etc. same for mediawiki.
If the site isn’t “blog” based, I’ll do a “root” install of xoops and use the WP 2.x.x xoops module as opposed to a standalone install of WP.
my approach to all of this is pretty flexible, it requires some upfront work to get everything xhtml/css valid, and themed/styled correctly, but once that’s done you have a really powerfull platform which you can add and enhance very quickly.
if you have a site that’s been running already with lots of existing content in the applications you’ve mentioned, getting things set up correctly is a bit more difficult, but still worth the effort. I’m helping some friends in the coming weeks move a REALLY busy blog site to this type configuration.

In reply to: Old site, new CMS (i.e. WordPress)looks pretty good to me. a couple suggestions/ideas, based on your comments –
I think it’s well worth the effort to clean up the code so that both the html/xhtml and the css validates at the w3c.org validator. this makes adding new features, etc go much smoother in the long run.
WP “plays very well with others”, in other words, it’s a great platform for integrating with other things as you need them. Typically for myself and for clients, I’ll do a xoops install “under” wordpress (as opposed to using wordpress as a xoops module) when I set up a site based on wordpress, the xoops cms, then allows the addition of a tremendous amount of very powerful features, and is quite easy to tie into the existing WP install, and to apply the same theme/styles to.
that’s my 2cents.

Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Can admin but can’t see blog after installFrom the wordpress MU site –
WordPress MU is multi-user version of the famous WordPress blogging application. It is ideal for people wanting to offer a hosted version of WordPress, but due to its complexity installation and maintainance is not supported in the same manner WordPress is. (You cannot get support on the WordPress support forums.)looks to me like you probably have some issues with the actual server configuration, not the WP software.

In reply to: Worst Tech Support? YahooI used to host my servers on my own network/T3’s, etc., I gave all that up in around 2000, and have been using CI Host dedicated servers ever since. The support is fantastic, and with the dedicated servers at least, you can do anything you want. They also have “shared” unix hosting packages which would be great for WP sites not needing a dedicated server ot those not needing more than one site, etc. http://www.cihost.com
ps. if you do decide to switch, use hradil.us as your “promo”/refferal code and they’ll give you some kind of discounts, etc.
