WordPress.com is indeed a hosted service that lets you create a WordPress blog on their servers. You don’t have access to much beyond being able to write posts. I think you can now pay a monthly fee to be able to access the templates (so that you can change colour schemes, layout and so on) but I don’t know that you can display your own advertising.
WordPress.org however (where you are now!) provides the free WordPress software that you can download and install on your own webspace and domain (for example, a domain name and webspace bought from GoDaddy).
You will certainly be able to run advertising on your own hosted WordPress installation, there are many thousands of examples of people doing just that.

Looks good in Firefox 1.5.07 but the final (Links) column drops in IE6 and the left hand side of the text is hidden. I can put a screenshot up if you need it.
I’d also add a Skip to Content link for screenreader users.

In reply to: Keep getting forced to d/l php scriptI’ve had the .php download problem on publishing since upgrading to Firefox 1.5 but have twice been unable to publish in the past week. I tried replacing post.php but a reboot straight after solved the problem (Windows 2K Pro).
