Are you sure you uploaded all the files in the wordpress folder? I also got a blank page at first when updating because I only uploaded the wp-admin and wp-include folders and forgot all the other files in the root folder. Try uploading everything again and see if you missed something.

You may have had the same issue I was having which I just solved after pulling my hair for some time. Following the guide, I entered ” (one double quote mark) for password (i.e. no password) when it should be ” (two single quote marks). Perhaps you entered it wrong the first time and fixed it on your second try. Hope this helps others with the same problem.
