The permissions for simonhipkins.com wp-login.php are
USER: Read Write (Execute wasn’t ticked but I have now and tried to log-in with the usual result)
HOWEVER
The permissions for keypictures.org wp-login.php were the same and when I ticked Execute and tried to log in my username and password were accepted.Thank you for all your help. Will try to figure out what’s happening with the simonhipkins.com log-in.

In reply to: Username and Password not working when trying to log inThanks, Jack. As I said I inherited the simonhipkins.com site when doing this set up of the new one. I take your point though – presumably I should have updated the WP version and had a look at the compatibility of the plug-ins.
Anyway, I have done what you said – renamed the plug-ins folder and cleared the cache. Unfortunately simonhipkins.com/wp-admin is defaulting to the long URL http://www.simonhipkins.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fsimonhipkins.com%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1
In an act of optimism I tried the username and password but predictably it was telling me “ERROR: Invalid username.”

In reply to: Username and Password not working when trying to log inJack, I should say that I didn’t build the simonhipkins.com site but the WordPress version is 3.9.2. Keypictures.org is version 4.0.

Thanks, I have. That’s where I found possible solutions but none seem to work for me. Some posts suggest it’s the permalinks (tried it), some htaccess (edited it), some plug-ins (changed the name of the folder as suggested). Just don’t know what to do now.
Perhaps I should strip it all back and start to rebuild the sites again. Seems like a lot of work if there is an answer somewhere in the WordPress community.
