    thanks govpatel, my isp has checked this out extensively, and there is nothing in the logs nor any reason (they claim) for it being blocked. I can manually update, but not auto. Obviously I’d prefer auto-update to work as it is less time consuming. It also worked in earlier versions (certainly the 2.X versions) but stopped working in more recent ones 3.2.1 and above.

    now checked server’s error logs, checked the php installed. It is none of these. Apparently when I click on auto update of a plugin, after being prompted and entering ftp details, wordpress does nothing, just hangs – it does send anything to the server to even generate an error…

    yeah contacted the hosts, no issues their end. I suspect something happened when I tried to autoupdate when there was not enough room on my server. Since then I have extended my space on the server and re-installed 3.2.1 manually, but the auto-update still fails. It requests my ftp details and password, does the handshake and then I get a blank screen (with the tool bar down the left side) – just hangs.

    Esmi,

    Thanks for your continued concern and ideas. It was the Jetpack thing that I needed. Not sure how I managed to miss that Jetpack was now required – I’ve been away for my blog for about 1 month, maybe that’s the reason.

    Anyhow stats now working. Not sure about the erratic saving. Will check over time and if still an issue will deactivate all plugins as you suggest

    I’ve deactivated the plugins suggested in the master list, I have 20 10 theme already installed

    not sure what “resetting” the plugins folder involves.

    the wp-stats issue seems to be something more widespread that others are having issues with, maybe like an API key is not being found or similar?

    RE ACTIVATED PLUGINS ONE BY ONE AND IT ALL CAME TO LIFE (SOMEHOW!)
