Correction: Just double-checked and Mod_rewrite is NOT turned on. Apparently Aabaco doesn’t allow it. So they won’t let me create htaccess files etc. So if that’s the problem, does that mean I need to find a new host, or is there still the possibility of a workaround?

Well, I found the file and made the hack — wp-admin/includes/post.php, lines 517-537. Now I just have to try to make a configurable plug-in out of it. Will post again if I run into a wall (or actually manage to do it)!
