Looks like the large images are more devastating to the server than I imagined. There are some great plugins to resize image on upload or not create the various sizes at all until they’re need dynamically. These should fix the problem. Thanks.
Just to clarify, WordPress has created the multiple resizes as normal but does not use the thumbnail size in displaying the thumbnails. Even pre-sizing the images this problem still occurs. It is not the result of user error.

I’m having this problem as well. Seems to be using the largest size available instead of the thumbnails.
