this is slightly awkward….
I found the answer, when I worked through the tutorial the writer used the custom taxonomy “Tags”, which (I just found out) is reserved by the wordpress system. I fixed the name and the system now works. Its kind of like if two houses have the same address then the mail can go to one, the other, or in worpress’s case neither.
