Since did some more searching on the forums and found many references to the wp_smtp plugin. I have now installed this and it resolved the issue.

Issue resolved: Installed WP SMTP plugin
been pulling my hair trying to resolve same issue..
changing permalink settings fixed immediately, thanks to all contributors on the topic..
