It looks like it’s working now. I had cleared my cache and everything, but perhaps I wasn’t patient enough.
I set my install to use the “www”-free siteurl and WP address, and once I checked the site on another browser, was able to log in to wp-admin without a problem. Now it looks like it’s working regardless of browser.
Hmm…still isn’t working for me (in 1.0) even after updating template-functions.php…although comment smilies were being stripped out altogether before this, and now I’m at least seeing the text equivalents.
