Figured it out. In the style sheet there was…

#commentlist li{
margin-left:-22px;
}

once I erased the “margin-left” entry it was fixed.

I figured it out. This plugin allows you to do exactly what I wanted: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/improved-include-page/
