Thank you both. Changing the theme did help, but I will try replacing my edited version and then building it back from there. I guess the saying, “If it’s not broke don’t fix it!” applies to my experimenting with the code. I think eventually I will need to buy a theme that has everything I want built in- maybe my problem is I want something more custom than what these themes have to offer.
