I’m having the same issue, running WordPress 2.3.2, PHP 5.2.5, and OpenID 2.1.2: when I attempt to activate, I get a fatal error with no text.
I’m happy to poke around and work on debugging this myself, but I’m not sure where to look for a more detailed error message. (I do see that it’s definitely not going to the Apache error logs, for example.)
I’m happy to work with someone to debug this, or to receive advice on where to look for more details.
Same issue here, running 2.3.2 and PHP 5.2.5. Fatal error, with no helpful text.
Same here, wp 2.3.3 and PHP 5.2.5. No helpful text at all, it just won’t work.
Any advice on getting more helpful errors out of wordpress? I’m willing to debug but I need some help with this.

Found a solution to this. You have to raise the memory_limit in the PHP.ini configuration file. I had to go up to about 100MB before it worked. Good luck hope it helps.
belshire,
is PHP.ini an WP file, or is it something that lies in the backend of our hosting provider?
not WP but hosting provider

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
