WordPress does not rewrite permalinks after change

Hi,

I am trying to change some of the permalinks in my site to better keywords.

WordPress does not seem to make the required 301 redirects automatically which I thought it did.

I am a newbie at WP so please help…. but basically!

I am trying to change from http://www.capabilityevents.co.uk/private-parties/ to http://www.capabilityevents.co.uk/event-planning/

I edit the page at http://www.capabilityevents.co.uk/private-parties/ and change the permalink to http://www.capabilityevents.co.uk/event-planning/ and I change the name of the page to event-planning and hit update.

Then I try and visit http://www.capabilityevents.co.uk/private-parties/ and I get taken to the home page rather than the correct page.

So what am I doing wrong.

Is WordPress not updating the htaccess file? I’ve had a look and this is the contents of the htaccess. It does not really mean much to me except that I know that a developer I employed did the 301 redirects for me.

Has he also turned off the WP automatic permalink redirect?

Or does WP not do redirects?

Have I got the wrong end of the stick?
