• My website was working fine. I updated to WP 4.0 and now it changed some setting somewhere that caused my webpage now not to show my page the way it was. It now shows it with just the word home in it and I can’t seem to get it to reveal the postings themselves…

PLEASE get back to me on this ASAP.

Are your front page settings still as they should be at Settings -> Reading in your blog’s Dashboard?

    Yes… That hasn’t changed…

To make it easier to understand… go to http://www.howlings.net and then go to http://www.howlings.net/home.

What it looks like to me is that somehow the home file, which is what shows when you go to the former looks like, got changed from what it’s supposed to be, the latter.

How to correct that I don’t know.

But what is it supposed to show? The latest posts?

If that’s the case, go to Settings – Reading and make sure that the “Front page displays” option is set to “Your latest posts”.

I did that. It didn’t work. I had the setting to static front page and HOME as the setting previously…

If I go to http://www.howlings.net/home it redirects back to http://www.howlings.net/ which shows “Home” as your front page.

It appears to be operating correctly. How should it be different? Remember, we’re not psychic, so we don’t know what it looked like before. 🙂

First off, I’m pretty on edge about this. The snide comment was totally unnecessary and condescending.

When I originally posted this, the look on the /home was showing the page as it was supposed to be. Now, for some reason, it’s pushing it back to the broken page. I was unaware of that until you mentioned it.

For some reason now the original /home is now been removed and replaced by the altered page that’s completely wrong. It doesn’t show any of my postings.

However, if you follow a link from one of my stories, it shows that story… I’m SO confused about what is going on. WP urged the update and I did it and now it doesn’t work and I’m not computer savvy enough to fix this on my own and I’m not even getting real suggestions for help either… I’m pretty stressed out about this.

Sorry, it wasn’t intended to be snide nor condescending.

When I originally posted this, the look on the /home was showing the page as it was supposed to be.

Could you please describe how it was supposed to look?

For some reason now the original /home is now been removed and replaced by the altered page that’s completely wrong.

At Settings -> Reading in your blog’s Dashboard, what is the title of the page currently set as the Front page and the title of the page currently set as the Posts page?

It doesn’t show any of my postings.

Do you mean that all of your blog posts were supposed to be at /home?

I’m not even getting real suggestions for help either

We’re trying to help, but please understand that we’re just as blind as you are in this situation. We need details.

Okay…here’s the best I know how to describe it.

I originally was using the Coraline theme and the last edition of WordPress. I got a notification that I switch it to 4.0. I did that and suddenly all of my posts were gone. I then did some reading and someone suggested switching to Twenty-Fourteen that that would cure the issue. So now I’m using the 2014 theme.

The frame around the outside of the page is still showing what it is supposed to be showing, so when you go to http://www.howlings.net the frame is 100% correct. However, where the blog entries were supposed to come up, what’s in it is something that just says, “HOME” and has the links on it. What is missing, and what USED to show were all of my blog entries. When I started looking into fixing this, if I used /home, it would show all the blog entries. Now it’s just redirecting back at the “bad page.” The one that just says home.

If you go to the individual pages one at a time, like this one, Those will work. Somehow the connection between the two pages is gone and I don’t know where to go to re-establish the correct connection.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but just to confirm: if you go to Settings – Reading, the “Front page displays” option is set to “Your latest posts“, right?

Just making sure that it’s NOT set to “A Static Page“.

If it’s set to “Your latest posts“, then your home page should simply show a list of your latest posts. If it doesn’t then….. (-thinking-)

Another check: you don’t have a file called front-page.php in the root of your theme by any chance?

Do you have a Page in your WordPress admin called “Home” that doesn’t really have any content? If that’s the case, then that’s the page you keep seeing, so try deleting that and see if that makes a difference.

    Thread Starter Mitch Beck

    (@mitch-beck)

The front page displays didn’t help.

    I don’t know about front-page.php

I would assume that’s on the host server. I suppose I can search for it. What do I do if I find it there?

Yes, checking for front-page.php would be on your server, but I don’t think it’s there after all.

For the “Home page”; that should just be in your WP admin. Go to Pages – All pages and check if there is a page called “Home”. If it doesn’t have any content, try to delete it.

Do you have access to the database and phpMyAdmin?

One other question. When you set Front page displays to “Your latest posts”, and you save the page (by hitting the “Save Changes” button), does the setting stick after the page is reloaded? Or does it go back to “A static page”?

    Thread Starter Mitch Beck

    (@mitch-beck)

I can get into anything on the server, I just need to be walked through what to do, step by step…

Also, if I delete that page as you mentioned, and i’m not sure I can, but I’ll look at it…could that also delete the other home page that WAS working before the problem occurred?

    Thread Starter Mitch Beck

    (@mitch-beck)

I did what you suggested and now the entire site has completely gone to hell… Before it looked fine except the posts were missing…now the entire site is messed up…

I’m not sure what you’ve done, but if you just changed the Front Page Displays setting, it can not really mess up your site. I just checked and it doesn’t look all messed up though…just different.

What I do see though, is that the theme has changed again. Since your first post, this is the second time I see the theme changes (it was different earlier today), so I’m getting a little lost. Unless you do/change more than just that setting I’ve mentioned before. Keep in mind that different themes can handle/display your posts/pages differently too!

Still like to have an answer to my question about whether or not the setting is saved or not please?

    Thread Starter Mitch Beck

    (@mitch-beck)

What setting? If you’re referring to the static page, it was set to home. I tried to change the theme back o the way that I had it prior.

All I can say at this point is I’m REALLY pissed off that WP put out an update that they encouraged people to use that changes things like this… I’m feeling more and more that I’m going to have to try a backup and rebuild the site from scratch and that pisses me off because it takes a lot of time that I just don’t have.
