Make sure the theme is contained within only one folder. Sometimes themes unzip into several layers of folders.
Your path to the theme should be like this: /wp-content/themes/theme-name/ – inside the “theme-name” folder you should see a graphics folder and a bunch of *.php files, and style.css.

You might try redownloading the theme, re-unzip it, then reupload it, making sure that it’s uploaded as ASCII for the files, and binary for the graphics.
It’s possible the style.css file got corrupted during the procedure….

I had /wp-content/themes/anthurium/anthurium
