WordFence has been reliably notifying me about errors via email, but recently stopped. I have already checked the email blacklist for our mail server. Our server is successfully sending emails from other plugins and I’ve even used the “send a test email” feature from WordFence (which I receive).

Any idea why it is no longer emailing me when there are new issues?

  • Hi,

Are you using a gmail address? Also, check to see if your email is blacklisted.

    Hello Brian,

I already saw that article. No, I’m using our corporate email address. As I mentioned if I use the “test email” feature of WordFence, I receive the test email just fine. That tells me that the mail server is not blacklisted. It is only the notifications/alerts from WordFence that I am missing.

    Thanks… Mike

    Having the exact same problem.

Must say, I have been testing different MX records setups (as I’ve just moved the site from BlueHost to DigitalOcean plus Cloudflare, but the mail remains handled at BlueHost). After the migration, there were some mail problems, but they are now all resolved: getting emails sent directly, getting the site’s form entries, can send out emails, and also the WordFence test email arrived without a problem.

Just no notifications of WordFence arrive.

Hm, have just whitelisted my own domain in SpamAssassin, and now am receiving admin login (myself) alert from WordFence. So that was probably it. Still a bit puzzled why the test email would go through without the need to whitelist.

    Hi Mike,

I’m thinking there is some issue on your end that is similar to the one frizzie55 describes. If you are receiving the test email, then Wordfence is not having an issue sending. It’s usually something blocking it at the mail server like a spam filter.

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hello Brian,

    Here is an update:

I updated WordFence yesterday and saw that there was an update posted right after. I made sure that the WordFence application showed no errors. I knew that when it scanned next, it would see the WordFence update and notify me. Sure enough, this morning I see that WordFence scanned at 1:41am and saw that the plugin update was needed. I did not receive an email alert.

I checked our local SMTP server’s log and do NOT see any emails being sent from the WordPress server. I went into the WordFence options page and told it to send a test email. Sure enough, I DO see the entry in the SMTP log and I did receive the email.

This SMTP server sends us a lot of email from various services at our office. I just don’t see why the only email that I know I’m missing is the WordFence email after scanning giving me the alert.

I even used the Email Activity Log feature and it is received just fine. Should I see an entry in the WordFence detailed log when it is sending an email alert?

    Thanks… Mike

    Hi Mike,

Wordfence uses WordPress’s built-in wp-mail to send so if it is sending the test email that function is at least working. Do you have a webmail account that you can try as a test? My only other thought is there could be something that has become damaged with your install. A backup and reinstall of Wordfence might be in order.

I just wanted to post a follow up to this thread. I was lazy and chose not to re-install WordFence to address this issue. However, it seems like one of the more recent updates to WordFence must have addressed it because we started receiving notices again when problems are found.

Thank you if you did finally find and fix this issue in the code. πŸ™‚

Hi, I have had this problem now since middle of November. I have checked that my sites are not blacklisted. The plugin works well on site and it is up-to-date. But I do not get the emails.

    Kind regards – DJ

@djoz: If you can try the test email box near the bottom of the Wordfence options page, it may help show if it is an issue with the emails, or possibly with the scans. Also, make sure that if you run a scan manually, that it does actually complete. (Sometimes if the host has changed something, scans will not finish even when they used to run fine.)

Since this post was already resolved, can you create a new topic using the form at the bottom of the forum page? Thanks!
