I Believe I have spam links in my website so I went for Wordfence Security and Scanning but Whenever I try to scan my website I get following message:

    “Scan Failed

The scan has failed because we were unable to contact the Wordfence servers. Some sites may need adjustments to run scans reliably. Click here for steps you can try.

    The error returned was:

The Wordfence scanning servers are currently unavailable. This may be for maintenance or a temporary outage. If this still occurs in an hour, please contact support. [404]”

I mentioned this issue on another topic and spoke with @wfpeter. I emailed my Diagnostic and Scan Logs, please check and let me know whats going on with it.

    Thank you!

Hi @mharslan, I appreciate you sending us the diagnostic and taking the time to create this ticket for us to address your case directly.

After having a closer look, it does seem that your issue will require the same resolution. I believe your version of the plugin may have been installed from outside of the wordpress.org repository and needs a full reinstallation.

Firstly, feel free to export your current settings (they can be reimported later): https://www.wordfence.com/help/tools/import-export/

Then, please go to the Wordfence Dashboard > Global Options page and look in the General Wordfence Options section. Look at the bottom of the section for “Delete Wordfence tables and data on deactivation” and check the box.

Save the changes on that page and then go to the Wordfence > Login Security > Settings page. At the bottom of the page check the box next to “Delete Login Security tables and data on deactivation” and save the changes.

Next, go to the Firewall > Manage WAF page and click the button that says “Remove Extended Protection. This should take a little while to finish”. If you do not see that button but see one that says “Optimize Firewall”, you can move on. On your WordPress Plugins page, deactivate Wordfence and then delete it.

Once you’ve done this please install a fresh copy of Wordfence from WordPress > Plugins > Add New

You might also find this useful: https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/remove-or-reset/

Once the reinstallation is complete, perform a scan to ensure your site hasn’t suffered from malware during the time your scans have been unable to complete.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Hi, thank you for guiding me, but export option is not working also. I get the same error

“An error occurred: The Wordfence scanning servers are currently unavailable. This may be for maintenance or a temporary outage. If this still occurs in an hour, please contact support. [404]”

And secondly, suppose I complete these steps then you’re recommending me to install free version of the plugin that doesn’t include the spam checker while my main issue is only spam links checking.

    Hi @mharslan,

From seeing your report and description of this issue, the site doesn’t appear to have a premium license key purchased from us, so you may be using a “nulled” copy, and your site could be infected as a consequence.

For more details about the dangers of nulled themes and plugins, please read this blog post which details the reason why we think this is bad idea: https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2019/11/wp-vcd-the-malware-you-install-on-your-own-sites/

The instructions I provided above to fully remove the plugin and install the free version is the best course of action for now to ensure your site is fully protected and not missing any scans or vital updates.

We understand that many people have websites built on their behalf by an external developer, or may look to shop around before purchasing a license. If you believe this is an error, or would like to provide details of where a license was purchased, please send an email to wftest @ wordfence . com.

Please add your forum username to the subject field so that we can look out for it.

    Thanks again,

    Peter.

    Hi @wfpeter,

Im very aware of using nulled stuff and I never used that. My friend purchased license so im just using his copy for testing purpose.

Let me describe it, my website got infected from thousands of spam links and im afraid if it would get banned from Google. I wanted to test either if I purchase the license would it do for me and get rid of spams I already have or I should go for complete website audit and security plan.

I never used Wordfence before so im not certain how every feature of this plugin works including spam and blacklist detector.

    Thanks for your guidance!

    Hi @mharslan,

Premium license keys cannot be shared and there is no license key installed on this website. We are not able to discuss the premium features on this forum as per the guidelines, but you can see an explanation for all scan options here:

    https://www.wordfence.com/help/scan/options/

As you describe that your site has been infected then we have a site cleaning guide here:

    https://www.wordfence.com/docs/how-to-clean-a-hacked-wordpress-site-using-wordfence/

If you have any questions about the premium features of the plugin to determine whether you require your own license key, then you will need to send your questions to our team at presales @ wordfence . com

    Thanks,

    Peter.
