Where is database stored on server?

This may be a silly question, but I couldn’t find an answer when searching through forums. Where exactly on the server is the database stored? Is it in the same directory as the wordpress files/folders? I ask because, on my windows/iis machine, it is stored under the mysql folder in program files.
