  • Generally speaking, fluid layout refers to the practice of having elements of your website take up certain percentages of the window, regardless of the window’s width: the main content area always takes up 65% of the window and the sidebar always takes up 35%. Responsive layout refers to displaying different layouts at different screen sizes: the main content area and the sidebar are displayed side by side, until the window is smaller than 800px, at which point the layout changes so that the main content area is stacked on top of the sidebar. These two layout patterns are often used together, as in my example.

OK thank you; are “window” and “screen size” synonyms?

    In this context, yes.
