One could use get_currentuserinfo() to get the logged in user’s info and display it. Just an idea you could probably use. 🙂
It does exist, but you obviously need a way to id someone if you want to welcome them by name.
DElyMyth (http://www.delymyth.net/en/) has such a feature, based – I guess – on her advanced tracking plugin.
(It welcomes me by name anyway)

bump- any ideas- I have no clue how to use the get current user info thing. any help is greatly appreciated. Are there any readme’s or doc’s that explain it? I’ve searched.
