Users/Groups to see specific content

I’ve tried a few different plugins and have yet to find anything that will do what I want.

I’m looking for something that will allow me to create multiple groups with various permissions. My goal is to create posts and pages but only have them viewable by specific groups. I also would like some pages to be public.

I tried User Access Manager which changed some htacess files and put a password on the whole site.

There was another that I tried also but didn’t want to install correctly on the latest version of WP.

Can anyone make an suggestions or point me in the right direction?
