Username/Nickname Security

I understand we can add fields to WP-Members.

We have been using WP-Members for some time so our DB is populated with users.

If we add a new Field, do we need to do anything with the DB or does WP-Members handle this automatically.

And, is there a way to specify that the Username and the proposed new field Nickname cannot be the same.
