User profile display page

I am building a site to highlight non-profit groups on cape cod (capecodnonprofit.org) and would like to use the wordpress user feature to store their non-profit profile. I am also using cimys extra field plugin to add some more stuff (like town, phone etc) to their profiles.

I have just started and am open to new ideas, but I am looking for an easy way for users to search through other user’s profiles, as the point of the site is to get the non-profit groups networking. Does anyone know of a good plug in for user profile searching, or a method of displaying user profiles a search-able list?

My first idea would be to create a custom author page with everyone listed on it, but this would be clunky and hard to read.
