    1) I did not use a pre-designed theme. My web coder implemented my cool design into WordPress 2.2.1. Would the latest WP work with my design, and what would be the benefits?

    Benefit is security.

    Every theme is kind of “pre-designed”… Check on this page (and by searching your template files) if it uses any of the Template_Tags that were deprecated in 2.3. Other than that it should work.
