I’ve put the old files back for the time being, and it seems to be working (though without a sidebar for some reason). I would like to complete the upgrade, though.
There are 2 url’s you need to be sure are correct
http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL
Thanks for that. I’m afraid it didn’t work.
your sidebar is there, its just ‘fallen’ (scroll down).
Thats largely a consequence of this:
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Ftheconnexion.net%2Fwp%2F
The way you troubleshoot this is by eliminating posts off your front page, or by just doing this..
Look at this page:
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Ftheconnexion.net%2Fwp%2F
it displays fine. Therefore its not a recent post in that category thats the problem.
The same is true for the ‘stuff’ archive — that page looks fine.
What doesnt look fine is this:
http://theconnexion.net/wp/?cat=2
So, there you go. Your troubles lay in one or more of those most recent posts.

as for the upgrade, best be spending some more time on that. your current version is very insecure.
I’m grateful for the pointers – there was a missing ” in my formatting. Putting it back made all the difference.
I’m perplexed about what to do with the upgrade. I’ve since tried again and get the same result: the front page displays nothing, and the admin pages all redirect to a non-existant page in the root of my domain. I realise that I’m probably missing something ever so obvious, but I can’t imagine what it might be.
I deleted the old files and uploaded the new ones into the folder.
are you deactivating your plugins before the upgrade?
are you changing to the default theme before the upgrade?
if not, have you tried getting into the admin and changing the to the default theme afterwards?
what do the server’s error logs say, if anything?
are there any PHP errorlogs being generated, if so, what do they say?
I still don’t know what the problem was, but it has gone away. I’ve done the upgrade and all is well.
Thanks for the suggestions.
