Actually, the scheduler is just not running daily as it is set, but sometimes or once a month or in different time intervals which I am not able to relate to any of the settings. I checked the hints in the link, but nothing worked for me (even the debug backup stopped after one minute or so).
But I found following errors in the current log:
0327.083 (1) Error: makezip_addfiles returned false
0327.084 (1) makezip_addfiles(UpdraftPlus_BinZip) apparently failed (file=backup_2015-02-18-1439_The_Hiking_High_Heel_42d8dbf4ae69-uploads.zip.tmp, type=uploads, size=57411456) – retrying with PclZip
0327.094 (1) backup_2015-02-18-1439_The_Hiking_High_Heel_42d8dbf4ae69-uploads.zip.tmp: Zip file already exists, with 251 files
Could this be the reason why the job doesn’t run properly?
Should I clear the updraft folder in my web space where the zip files are stored?

That still sounds like a broken scheduler. The fact that it runs very occasionally indicates that the scheduler sometimes runs, which can be due to tricks used to kick it into action when you have the UpdraftPlus settings page open.
If you install the WP-Crontrol plugin, and visit Tools -> Crontrol, what do you see? (A screenshot would be handy – use http://snag.gy if it helps).

In the logfiles, there occure some warnings and errors:

0044.945 (0) The attempt to close the zip file returned an error (PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature). List of files we were trying to add follows (check their permissions).

0021.882 (0) Binary zip: error (code: 14 – look it up in the Diagnostics section of the zip manual at http://www.info-zip.org/mans/zip.html for interpretation… and also check that your hosting account quota is not full)

I checked permissions – they are fine..
