Backup archives are created locally, and then dispatched to the chosen remote storage, and then the local copy is deleted. It has to be done this way, because remote storage providers (e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) only provide an interface to receive a complete archive – i.e. there is not interface to send the files that make up the archive and have the remote storage provider construct it remotely.

So – given you have remote storage set up – i guess it s totally safe to delete the content of wp-content/updraft/ ?

If your backups are successfully being uploaded to remote storage (UpdraftPlus should inform you if there is an error), then you can delete the contents of the updraft backup folder.
However, the log files for backups and restorations are also stored in this directory. These are used for debugging and support, so only delete the if you are sure everything is working.

In my case the local archives are not getting deleted. What can I do to fix this?
Could you upload a full copy of the backup log? This should show why the backups are not deleting local archives.
