Updates and loading plugins never work..

Everytime I try to do the update or load a plugin the instal page stops at unpacking the file… It only seems to create the .tmp file on my site and never does anything else… I suspect some sort of permissions thing but have seen nothing talking about anything that has to be done to do updates or install plugins..

Any pointers would help…
